After todays crit I'm a bit confused but a bit happier at the same time.
These are the suggestions people made and the issues I need to think about with my two briefs:
Postcard brief:
- I said it is a summary of the news from the past month so if you've been away or just want a nice collection of postcards you can get them.
- Could it double up as promotional material for a particular newspaper? Promote the sections of the Guardian.
- Should it be looking forward rather than a retrospective summary? i.e. gives an overview of the news stories that will be followed in the next month.
- I could illustrate the website information.
- The back needs to be simpler, not the hand drawn feel because people want to read the news not look at something nice (thats what the front is for)
- I could use the typeface, point size and stuff from The Guardian for the back.
- I could try and help a newspaper thats not doing very well
- I think I will still do the retrospective news but direct the reader to the website or give a very brief overview (maybe on one postcard or on the inside of the pack) for the next month.
Book brief:
- I didn't know if my subject matter was silly but they said its fine.
- I want it to be like Edward Monkton
- I want to make some postcards to go with it of the best/funny pages.
- I could choose one food and make a poem/story about it/why i hate it/love it.
- I want to consider everything to the end as if it were a real product e.g. set of postcards wrapped in celophane, proper cover for the book and give everything a name to make it a set.
- I could do different printing processes for each page (probably wont cos im lazy) e.g. potato - potato printing, tomatoes - glossy stock.
- It will probably have to be a normal book rather than experimenting with the format. A6 size like the cute ones in borders.
I need to :
- Look at The Guardian website (apparently they do picture news)
- Research editorial illustration/illustrators
- Think of a brand/ name for book stuff.
- Draw the pages big and scale them down to make them look better.
